What to do If your child knocks out a tooth
| San Diego County Fluoride
On your next visit you may be asked to fill out a new form at check in, Dr. Chan hopes this helps answer parent questions. If you have additional questions please feel free to ask any staff member.
In our ongoing commitment to stay up-to-date, we are now required to assess patients for aerosol transmissible diseases (ATD). In compliance with Cal-OSHA Title 8 Section 5199, dental facilities must pre-screen patients for aerosol transmissible diseases. In our office we will use this form to pre-screen a patient before dental procedures are performed to determine whether a patient may present an ATD exposure risk. We wanted to thank you in advance for your cooperation with this regulatory standard.

Fluoride
Varnish...How Can it Help My Child?
Fluoride varnish is a
professionally applied, highly concentrated fluoride
product that has been widely used in Europe and Canada
as a caries prevention agent since the 1960's. (3)
Fluoride varnish applications 2
to 4 times a year have been shown to decrease caries in
the permanent dentition by
38%. (2)
Fluoride varnish can
also reverse early caries lesions (white spot lesions).
(2)
Demineralization
around orthodontic brackets can appear in as little as 4
weeks in the presence of fermentable carbohydrates. (1)
One application of
fluoride varnish around orthodontic brackets can reduce
enamel demineralization by 40% over a three month
period. (1)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
has received reports of methemoglobinemia, a rare but
serious blood disorder that is associated with pain
relievers, including teething gels, that contain
benzocaine sold under the brand names Anbesol,
Hurricaine, Orajel, Baby Orajel, Orabase and generic
brands.
Methemoglobinemia is a serious blood
disorder that reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood
stream and, in severe cases, can lead to death.
Symptoms, which could possibly follow a single
application of benzocaine with concentrations as low as
7.5 percent, include pale, gray or blue-colored skin,
lips, and nail beds; shortness of breath; fatigue;
confusion; headache; lightheadedness; and rapid heart
rate.
The FDA is advising health care professionals to refer
to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines
for teething, which recommend giving infants and
toddlers a chilled (not frozen) teething ring or gently
rubbing or massaging the gums with a finger instead of
using benzocaine to relieve the symptoms. (AAPD 2011)

anesthesia

enamel- no more white spot!

tooth can be prolonged!
Are you a
good candidate for Icon treatment?
Icon is a breakthrough treatment that can...
· Stop an early cavity before it needs to be “drilled and
filled”
· Cosmetically remove white spots caused by early cavities
or orthodontic treatment
Icon is only appropriate for treating cavities in early

What do
you do if your child knocks out a permanent incisor?
The best way to preserve a
PERMANENT TOOTH
that has been knocked out is to
put it back into its
socket as QUICKLY as possible.
Re-implantation is
BEST AT THE SITE OF THE ACCIDENT within 15
minutes to ensure a favorable outcome. You still must
take the patient to a dentist. If it's not
possible to re-implant the tooth the next best option is
to carefully pick up the tooth by the crown (avoid
touching the root) and put the tooth in a cup of saline
solution or fresh cold milk, and get to a dentist as
soon as possible. For more information please click on

The San Diego dental society
website is a great way to find information concerning
you and/or your children. A wonderful pediatric
resource is the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
and their website
www.aapd.org. The
AAPD is the membership organization representing
pediatric dentistry and their mission is to promote
optimal oral health for children. Dr. Chan will be
using the “What’s New” page to convey helpful tips and
information from the AAPD to her patients. She hopes
the topics will be helpful and informative to parents
and will be changed monthly.
