Field Trip

Our entire staff is dedicated to providing thorough and gentle dental care.  We are specialists in Pediatric Dentistry and our goal is to promote Healthy Grins for life.  Pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry.  We are specially trained for the unique dental health needs of children.  Beyond the dental degree, our professional education includes completing a two-year hospital residency program where advanced training, including child psychology, pediatric sedation, oral-facial trauma management, growth and development, and working with the mentally and physically handicapped, is obtained.  Our caring staff is able to treat all children, from those with special needs to the extremely apprehensive.  We strive to make each child's dental visit as pleasant as possible.

At what age should my child first visit the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association recommend that a visit to the dentist should be scheduled by the child's first birthday.  At this young age problems can be detected and treated early.  More importantly, it can help establish a positive relationship between your child and the dentist.

Can I visit the office with my child for an orientation?

We welcome you and your child to come visit the office for a parent/child orientation even before your child’s first visit.  We hold these orientations twice a month in our office.  This orientation would allow you and your child to see exactly what would happen during his/her first visit to the dentist.  This also would allow you to see our office, meet our wonderful staff, and to ask any general questions.

What will happen during my child's first visit?

At your child's first appointment, we will examine his/her teeth, gums, and soft tissue checking for decay and other problems or abnormalities in the mouth.  Your child's bite, proper alignment of jaws, and spacing for permanent teeth will also be evaluated.  Your child's teeth may then be cleaned and treated with a topical fluoride solution.  We may also take any necessary x-rays to evaluate for hidden decay, position and location of developing permanent teeth.  We will discuss potential problems such as nursing decay, pacifier and thumb-sucking habits.  Dr. Chan and her staff will advise you on a program of preventive health care including brushing, flossing, proper nutrition, and the use of fluoride.

What do I tell my child about seeing the dentist?

Tell them that the dentist is a friendly doctor who will help them take care of their teeth.  Talk about the visit in a positive matter of fact way, as you would any important new experience.  Don't let the child know you feel any anxiety about going to the dentist and don't use a dental visit as a punishment or threat.  Avoid negative phrases such as "hurt", "drill", "pull" and "shot". Our office makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to children.   A visit to the dentist should be a delightful adventure for a young child.

Do I stay with my child during the visit?

If your child is over the age of 3, we ask that you allow them to accompany our staff through the dental experience. We are all highly experienced in helping children overcome anxiety.    We can usually establish a closer rapport with your child when you are not present. Our purpose is to gain your child's confidence and overcome apprehension.  Studies and experience have shown that most children over the age of 3 react more positively when permitted to experience the dental visit on their own and in an environment designed for children.

Children's behavior in the dental office:

Pleasant visits to the dental office help a child establish trust and confidence that will last a lifetime.  Our tem of friendly and compassionate professionals are specifically trained to help young, apprehensive children feel comfortable seeing the dentist.  The bright and cheerful office surroundings and televisions above the treatment chairs will help your child feel comfortable and at ease.  We recommend scheduling younger children in the morning, when they are more rested and cooperative.

How often should regular visits be scheduled?

Ordinarily, periodic recall appointments, which include an examination, preventive dental education, cleaning and fluoride treatments will be recommended twice a year.  The frequency of dental visits will partly depend on your child's eating habits; how clean his or her teeth are kept; and if he/she has a history of dental decay.

For children that need extra help with keeping their teeth clean or are at a higher risk for tooth decay we may recommend them to be a part of our PLAQUE CONTROL PROGRAM.  In this program, your child will come a little more often for their cleanings, every 3 months versus every 6 months.  And, most importantly, your child will receive a professional cleaning and fluoride treatment with an emphasis on good brushing and flossing techniques.  In addition, YOU are included in a detailed tooth brushing and flossing instruction session.  All children in active orthodontic treatment, and children that are at a greater risk for decay would benefit greatly from this program.

Field Trip - National Children's Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, a good time to make sure your kids have regular check -ups.  Dental health month is also a time when teachers help students become more aware of good dental hygiene and  tooth care.  Dr. Chan and her dental educators regularly provide short, but informative at-school programs. We welcome school classes, boy and girl scout troops and many parent groups to our office for a field trip to get oriented and understand even more about caring for teeth.  These field trips are a great way for scouts to earn merit badges too! Please call (619)579-2363 to schedule a field trip!
